Game Fixes for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (lag, crashing, graphics issues, black screen, freezing, etc)

The Need for Speed series is always VERY fun, especially for those who play it on a console like Playstation 3 (PS3). Users playing the PC version might run into some hiccups though, as it’s difficult to port a game flawlessly from a console based system to Windows or Mac. This game guide is to help you fix those NFS / NFSHP problems.

Anyway, hope it helps! If not, please do comment and we’ll get back to you. Also, if you know any other fixes, we’d greatly appreciate if you posted them 🙂 This guide is for troubleshooting both the limited edition and normal versions of this game.

Game Controller Not Working

If your game controller is not working for the PC version of this game, then, try plugging the game controller in to the computer only AFTER the game is open. The game may be able to detect it this way if it didn’t previously.

Game Lag / Stuttering / Choppy Frame Rate

First, verify that your hardware even supports the game by checking the minimum requirements below.

— Lower your game settings (i.e. resolution, textures, shadows, etc)
— Update your drivers, as the most up-to-date drivers commonly offer performance enhancements and game fixes for games

Game Crashes / Crashing / Black Screen

If your game crashes (i.e. when you just begin a race) or you have a black screen on launch / when launching the game, then try these game fixes:

— Update your video drivers
— Update your DirectX (All Windows versions)
— If on Windows 7 or Vista, then try to set the compatibility for your game EXE to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)
— Run the game as an ADMINISTRATOR (Windows 7)
— For NVIDIA and ATI graphics card users, set the software to allow for applications to control the graphics and settings rather than the driver software
— Set the affinity of NFS11.exe to 1 core by opening task manager (CTRL+ALT DEL) -> right clicking NSF11.exe in the “processes” category -> Set Affinity -> and then choosing Core 0 to run on the exe. However, it’s been reported that setting Core 0 as well as Core 1 works very well, so I suggest trying that first. This game fix is mainly for quad core processors and up, but it’s worth trying on other processors too.

Weird Game Textures / Artifacts on Screen / Pixelation

If your graphics are weird and have a glitch or several glitches, then I suggest the below methods to attempt to fix it:

— Update your drivers
— Alter your game settings (i.e. shadows, textures, etc) and lower their settings
— Update your DirectX (All Windows versions)

Some people have been experiencing an error that they describe as transparent or invisible textures.

No Anti-aliasing / AA

No anti-alias option is currently available for this game. Unfortunately, it looks like forcing antialiasing through NVIDIA and ATI Catalyst Control Center doesn’t work. You can give it a try anyway though. Keep in mind that this is a console port so that’s why the option isn’t available. Forcing anti-aliasing of this game IS possible to do though, so I’ll try to post the steps here when I figure it out.

Autolog Not Working

Autolog for this game seems to be having problems for Windows / PC version at the moment. Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have better luck. If you cannot use Autolog or it’s unavailable / offline, then unfortunately all you can do is wait at the moment.

so i go on low resoulution, turn blur off, high res. textures off, and still crash didnt even start my car so i guess there is a big problem with something and i am waiting for fix or maybe patch from ea, good luck all

  12. Comments  darksidesteve   |  Wednesday, 17 November 2010 at 2:05 PM

Same issue here too, I can select a car and then the color, but before it get’s to the actual start of the race, crash!.. My system is 3.4GHz core2Quad, GTX470, Win 7 64 bit Ult. I tried the processor affinity but I can get it work for some reason. I haven’t tried just turning off my cores manually in my BIOS. I have notified EA Games, and they are aware of the problem (of course if was an issue with my system natually) but I think enough people are complaining about it they finally realize they have a serious bug in their game. One thing for sure, under Win 7, you HAVE to run it in compatibility mode (XP SP-3)& run as admin, just to get past the connecting to autolog, and there’s no way to just turn autolog off. I’ve NEVER had so many problems trying to run a NSF game ever. I also have tried under XP PRo (as my gaming system is dual boot) and same exact thing, crash crash crash! EA needs to come out with a patch soon. One thing for sure, it’s not a driver issue with Nvidia or ATI because people running one or the other graphics cards are all having the same problem. I’ll bet it’s a multi-core bug within the game itself. The EA admits it’s their problem, the sooner it will be resolved. I’ve also heard XBox 360 versions are also having problems with autolog. So this game was not ready for prime time like it should have been. Get it together EA or it will be the last NSF game I ever buy!

  13. Comments  OmniNegro   |  Wednesday, 17 November 2010 at 6:48 PM

Do not try to turn off cores in BIOS. If the game required that, then the game belongs in the garbage!

Right click the game’s shortcut and select properties. Somewhere in that is the CPU affinity. Select one core only. But DO NOT USE THIS STEP unless everything else fails. This sort of thing is a last resort of the desperate.

And to those who are surprised how buggy the game is, you knew it was an EA game right? EA only releases games in an early beta stage of development(Or thereabouts). Try to prove me wrong!

I have entirely blacklisted EA. They will never get my sales again.

Good luck to all the EA victims. I will try to help as I can, but it may be a lost cause. (Because EA is involved)

I consider this a hobby. It is quite rewarding to help out fellow gamers. Long live PC gaming!

  16. Comments  LG   |  Thursday, 18 November 2010 at 4:02 AM

With my respect Omni, i think EA not the one to blame here as the published alot of games like mass effect, crysis, battlefield …, all these game were awesome, successful and had no bugs. So u should blame the the developer, “Criterion” in this case.

    OmniNegro,
If I select only 1 core out of 4 it lags so hard, but on 2-3 it goes fine. Is that bad for CPU to use 2-3 intead of 1 or something?

I´ve done an overclock and i alredy played a lot of games. I rencetly played call of duty black ops and medal of honor and i played them very well MAX SETTINGS. I think it´s becouse of the overclock. Can someone helpe me?

  21. Comments  OmniNegro   |  Thursday, 18 November 2010 at 2:13 PM

    Several things to address:
Obviously, selecting only one core will always result in lower performance. This is to be expected. It is just something to do if you can not get the game to work any other way. Do not apply this step if your game runs without doing it. It would be like running a car with all but one cylinder disabled. (Except that the CPU can run with only one core in use, it will just be much slower.

And with my own returned respect LG, I see that some of those games you mentioned were quite stable. But that is a bit of a stretch to say they had no bugs. They required numerous patches and countless reports from users to achieve the (Admittedly)great status they have.

I hold EA to blame simply because in every case I see EA involved, the first week or two after a game is released there are a huge number of complaints from users for a variety of issues. Some may well be on the user side, but enough remain to leave a sour taste in my mouth.

Perhaps I am being too harsh? I am open to the possibility, but I retain my ever-growing blacklist. 🙂

Now for something completely different…. (Monty Python reference)

I am running Windows 7 x64 and I can not find the CPU affinity in the shortcut as I described. I believe those instructions may have been from the good ‘ol Windows XP days.

It seems the only way I can find is through the Task Manager or a third party program like Process Lasso (That is not a free program, so I suggest waiting to see if others have a solution). But that may well work. …if the game does not crash before you can manage that. Anyone know of a more persistent way to do this?

How to do this in the Task Manager is as follows.
    1. Start the game.
    2. Press CTRL+ALT+Delete to bring up either the Task Manager, or the login screen, and if the login screen, select “Start Task Manager”.
    3. Locate the games executable. (NSHP.exe)?
    4. Right Click the executable.
    5. Select and left click on “Set Affinity”.
    6. Uncheck everything but one core. It should not matter what core you select, but you can use “Core 0” safely in almost every case.
    7. Profit. 🙂

These steps are fairly simple and clear. If anyone has difficulty I will gladly reword things to try to clarify. If you do not see anything like the things I mentioned then I can not really help you. But ask anyway, as someone else may know what you need to do.

  31. Comments  Raz-00   |  Friday, 19 November 2010 at 11:01 PM

To anyone using a video card with multiple GPUs (Nvidia and ATI alike) I heard on the official EA forums and some other forums that the game dislikes multicores of ANY kind. So, as a work around untill Criterion can release a patch for it, you can try disabling the extra core on your video card. Obviously, like Omni said, this will result in a degradation of performance in game, but will let it be at least runable. You can try tweaking the graphics settings to lower-than-what-you-would-like-specifications, and may make it so you can drive your car and still pull 20ish FPS, but I would not hold my breath for a miracle.

Criterion needs to get on this, and shame on EA for backing (or pushing) a game that is so obviously flawed. The future in gaming is multiple core everything… Hell, I expect to see RAM with its own onboard controllers pretty soon(ish) and who knows what that will do?!

If that does not work, then we will have to be patient and wait for the patch that is hopefully in the pipes. So far, no word as of this writing on either EA’s forums or Criterions about a patch fix for performance or crashing on PC. *le sigh*

    Hang tight, and good luck!

    @Kim
Unless they have pulled a rabbit out of the hat, Intel GPUs are not really good enough for this or any modern game.

I am unaware of any Intel GPUs that are add-in cards. They are all integrated and nearly worthless for gaming.

As a general rule, only Radeon and Geforce chipsets are going to have any chance of working. Intel chipsets speak a different language from these two. They do not show the textures because they are not capable of showing them.

Radeon and Geforce chipsets use what they call a “Shader Model” and this game I believe requires Shader Model 3 to run.

Check the following link to try to find your chipset and it will tell you what version of the shader it supports.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA

And here is a quote of the GPUs supported at this time.
Supported Video Cards at Time of Release: ATI® RADEON® X1950, hd 2000/3000/4000/5000 series NVIDIA GeForce ® 7 (7600 or better)/8/9/100/200 series.

  55. Comments  OmniRoguelike   |  Tuesday, 23 November 2010 at 4:55 PM

Also, the problem could be that the Intel Integrated GPU simply does not have enough bandwidth to load the textures fast enough to display them.

Integrated graphics adapters are alright for general office type work, but they are undergunned by far for modern gaming.

It would be like fighting a modern army with a musket. I am sorry for you. But you simply have no choice but to upgrade your video card if possible.

i disagree with you.bcoz this is the first time it happen to me.and i can play other modern game(such as:assassins creed 2,medal of honor 2010,etc….higher graphic) and run smoothly without weird games texture.i dont know why every time i ask people about this they always answer me that intel video card faultand not the game fault.bcoz ATI also got problem.
For example,James Cameron Avatar games texture look weird on ATI but when i install it on Intel HD Graphic , the game running amoothly perfect.
I hope there will be a patch, soon.

Dont bother i have nothing of those problems prolly drivers or windows based errors, theres 1 issue though the stutter i have phenom ii x4 and i watched task manager while runing game it uses only 1 core thats why it stutters…they should stop bringing games from console to pc with a frikin poor programing..our average pc’s are stupid fast compared to consoles but with optimizes for console all that power is lost…

  61. Comments  OmniRoguelike   |  Sunday, 28 November 2010 at 9:09 PM

Wow. Worst coded game in modern history. It seems to have zero support for half the multi-core CPUs in existence.

EA should go bankrupt for this epic failure.

Think I am exaggerating? Read from their own forums.
    http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/4003689.page

How could this obviously early alpha stage game ever be sold to the general public?

There is a reason I blacklist EA. Perhaps you should avoid this abomination until they bother to fix the glaring holes in the executable.

  62. Comments  OmniRoguelike   |  Sunday, 28 November 2010 at 9:25 PM

And for those of you who already bought a copy of this garbage, may I suggest getting together with others and forming a class action group? Or perhaps even just a list of people who feel cheated and betrayed by this? Individually EA will ignore each and every one of you. But as a group they have no choice but to try something to get you to shut up.

This may not be the right place for such a thing. I do not want to drag Geek Montage into the fire with EA. But someone out there has an idea of where to join forces and be heard. Speak up!

i have tried contacting EA but there support sucks…..was the same for need for speede world. the game stated xbox controller(PC) recommemnded but never worked on my system and all EA would say was they were aware of the problem….and they never seemed to fix it as far as i could make out.

  66. Comments  OmniRoguelike   |  Thursday, 02 December 2010 at 11:27 AM

    @neo2020

Have you tried the obvious possible fix above? Unplugging the controller until the game is fully started and you are actually in the game before plugging it in seems like a terrible hoop to have to jump through. But EA “Support” is as big a joke as saying the game is free if you buy it at the right time.

It may well be true sometime in the future when we do away with world hunger and stop focusing on material things. And the Starship Enterprise might beam down a support staff to fix the controller issues too. 🙂

Did I mention I hate EA?

I wish I could help. And perhaps I can help in some small way. Could you tell us about how your controller is plugged in? I presume via USB, but what revision of the USB standard? Often times stuff will not work properly if you are one of the few remaining people with USB 1.1 ports. (I am unaware of any motherboard that would socket a core 2 quad but not have USB 2 or even USB 3.

There really is no fix for that. But if you have USB 2 ports, are they integrated on the motherboard? And presuming so, would you mind telling us what brand and model of motherboard?

The same if it is USB 3 ports. And some motherboards have both USB 2 and 3 ports, so you may be able to get it to work by trying different ports.

It is possible we can narrow the scope of what causes the problem this way. I wish you luck.

  68. Comments  Anonymous   |  Thursday, 02 December 2010 at 5:22 PM

    @ OmniRoguelike
I have managed to get this working with my quad core.

First I un-installed all the game then I ran cc cleaner and also ran the registry cleaner(within cc cleaner).

Next I ran malwarebytes on a full clean and then spybot (full clean) and finally a programme I have called regclean pro which is a powerful reg cleaner.

I then installed the game and ran the new patch.

Next I started the game with controller and dongle not installed.

Finally once the game started I placed the dongle in the back usb and the xbox controller in the front.

Voilla ….been running most of the day and so far no crashes(apart from my driving)

  69. Comments  neo2020   |  Thursday, 02 December 2010 at 5:35 PM

oh as for my controller i have a wireless xbox controller which also has a charger cable via usb and i also use a dongle.

i generally leave the controller and the dongle in the front usb ports….but as in your sugestion i decided to start the game without them plugged in and also i decided to try different usb ports.

i think installing the patch afetr a clean install and clean up of the game is also worth trying for anyone else that is still getting any game or system crashes

Thank you Anonymous and neo2020. Despite what it may seem, these little bits of information really do help some people along. (Unlike EA support)

Anonymous, when you say cc cleaner, are you referring to the freeware program that was originally called crap cleaner? (It is mandatory on any Windows system in my humble opinion)

Spybot Search and Destroy is also essential. Malwarebytes has a good reputation, but I avoid their products simply because I think they have a motive to show possible false positives to scare people into buying the full version. But I have no evidence that they have ever done anything like that. I just have a personal rule never to use any shareware or limited versions when there may be a freeware application that could cover my needs in that area.

We will find a way to fix these horrible problems. I just finished reinstalling Windows 7 x64 on my system, so I may have to look into these issues a bit personally. (I can not promise it though, I have too much to do most of the time)

Geek Montage is here to help. If you have any ideas, please speak up! And good luck to everyone.

Hello, I just got it on my windows 7 pc. I am very wondered that i can’t any graphics setting option. i mean to say, there is only Resolution, High Quality Texture, Motion Blur, Screen Calibration, Margin etc. But shouldn’t there be more options like car details, world details, effects ? and when i play, i just see things flicking; trees, house flicks. this is weird ? any solution ?

  78. Comments  OmniRoguelike   |  Friday, 10 December 2010 at 12:50 AM

    @Swagata

The reason there is practically nothing there is that this is not a real PC game. It is a console port. And clearly a terrible one too. EA games at it’s best. They take the source code for the Xbox version and recompile it with minimal changes to get it to barely work on a few PCs. Then they sell it to you and laugh when you bother to complain that it does not work. Feel free to join me in boycotting EA games forever.

    @sanjesh kumar

I suspect this is yet another problem with he game. Many people have control problems. So far, I do not know of any solutions. Sorry.

So I’ve been going through doing everything suggested and I’ve come to the conclusion that Hot Pursuit was published without sufficient performance checks for the PC. My system is: Windows 7 64-bit, Intel i5 650 @ 3.2ghz, nVidia GTS 250 512mb and 4gb DDR3. I’ve already tried reinstalling twice and it hasn’t helped so…I’m at loss, and so is my respect for EA/Criterion’s development

my nfs hot pursuit 2010 was crashing to desktop right before the car selection screen. I only had to update my mobile intel GMA 4500MHD graphics card drivers (from intel’s download center) just last night to stop the crashing.everything is ok including sound. But i think EA should do something really fast about the problems many people are having running this game .EA stop messing with NFS it’s not cool.

I’ve seen enough all of your comments and all of your freaky reactions on this game. Even I, myself experienced a laggy features of this game (maybe it is included 😀 lol.

I found out that I don’t have to use multiple core to play, even a higher or lower gpu for the graphics and visuals. Dual core cpu with 2GB RAM DDR2 (667 or 800 MHz) will do. It’s because some of you has a computer higher than recommended. Some games will run, but not as good as it was. Well, try to enable hibernation as a temporary fix for this. Or if you don’t want to, just disable some of applications that run without your notification (except for anti virus). Use msconfig to do that.

    Start > Run > msconfig > Enter

At the general tab, choose selective start up. On a Services tab, check “Hide all Microsoft Services” and then select the programs that you didn’t usually use so that it will never eat some of your “processor’s calculation” and RAM. Also in startup tab, choose only the programs that you didn’t use. But never turn on your anti virus.

This works for me, without any crashes or lags. I just downloaded the repacked version of the game (Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2010 by Tukash) 😀 I don’t care if I can’t connect to Autolog, I just want to play.

1_ spending almost a week trying to make it work
    2_playing the game.
I enjoy them both because by failing , those games make me learn more and more about how my pc works 😉

Finally friends, and all NFS fans, at last, I have found the fix for NFS HP 2010 crashing,(only for nvidia users)

while loading, at startup, at car select screen, or just before the race.

All the solutions which different sites says like,

    1. Updating dx.

    2. renaming the target of the NFS11.exe.

    3. updating your graphic card drivers to latest ones.

    4. changing affinity.

    5. running as administrator.

    6. changing compability to winxp service pack 2 or 3.

    are totally f*****g crap.

Idownloaded the game and completed the game within 10 days of release in november 2010

without any crashes, freezes, or any kind of errors.

Recently, I installed it again for playing and found it crashing to desktop before race.

I tried all the above crap, but it was just waste of time.

Then i tried to find the problem, and finally after 3 f*****g days, found it.

The thing is you need not update your graphic card drivers.

You need the Nvidia “260.99_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_english_whql” drivers.

Do not update your graphic card drivers above this version.

You can get the Nvidia 260.99 drivers here.

    first
@Omni: I really appreciate your comment and your concern regarding this game. I havent purchased this game yet and I’m still having doubts. And the posts above seems to be old enough for EA to have a patch or fix for it. But EA still gives me the option not to purchase the game. ^_^ cheers.

@sniperghostwarrior1: i think your just way too naive to see purpose in the older posts. if it wasnt for those people who complained and put negative posts for such a f**king certain game,
you would not have come to drive your car on NFS. ^_^

@SKJ: try locating the PROGRAM DATA folder located in drive C or any drive you used for your system(but i believe you are not unique to try to install your system on different drive i think). It is hidden though, but you can always type it at the address bar or at the run command on windows start button). There should be an EA folder there or try going to your user’s folder(if you are using windows 7) then unhide hidden files and system folders. There should be an Application Data folder.

to everyone: Sometimes, game developers intend to do this routine to release an undeveloped game for them to know what will be the common bugs or things they need to change, patch or what ever there is in need to be developed, which is unfair on the gamers part. And i really hate to think, but admit, that it is part of the reality. They are just too lazy to test there own product.

  114. Comments  Black_Ace   |  Saturday, 28 May 2011 at 5:58 PM

to everyone: by the way… if ever you will be having problems on any type of game… DO NOT POST THE PROBLEM TO THEIR SITE OR THEIR FORUMS. there is a 90% chance they will change the details. POST IT ON OTHER FORUM SITE and give them the link to that instead. or you can just spread the word. well, you can…. ^_^

Hi, I think I found a bug in the centifugal force – if I’m on a curve, the centrifugal force should push me out of it, ie. when turning to the left, the right side of a car should be pushed down. However, this is what I don’t observe in the NFS3 dynamics 🙂 Try it! I don’t know what their testers were paid for but this shouldn’t happen in a commercial product, should it! 😀 Anyway, is there any patch for that awfull bug?

  175. Comments  Gareth   |  Saturday, 28 January 2012 at 5:01 PM

I suggest you only try play High frame Rate games like these with these minimum Specs.

Intel i5 or a cpu with more than 2.8Ghz speed (4 cores)

4 GB ram – 8GB would be better but not needed.

64 Bit Operating system (win 7 is a MUST as XP just sucks with these new games,Vista takes like 2gb ram to run on its own so get rid of it ASAP as thats worse than xp,Win 7 is better as it doesn’t require allot of processor speed/ram)

would need a top end gfx card i suggest you fork out $100+ for one of these else there is no point playing games on your pc that look like your playing mine craft.(no offence to people reading but games now a days are built on graphics, quality, texture etc without a top end on like Raedon and Navida your screwed. i personally suggest Raedon 4800 series or higher as i have had mine for 8 years and its still kicking ass and has the 7.5/7.9 microsoft rating. =)

    My specs are

intel core i5-2500k CPU @ 3.30GHz 3.60GHz (not overclocked) and has 4 cores.
    4 GB of installed RAM.
    win 7 64bit OS

raedon 4870 gfx card. (ATI Graphics card)

  176. Comments  Gareth   |  Saturday, 28 January 2012 at 5:10 PM

Don’t forget cooling system ,you might be able to put the Farrari engine in a Mini but don’t expect it to perform like the Spider =)

buy the cool looking case with the 4 fans ,a cool pc is a fast pc =)

also i am positive there are game fixes for the many problems EA games have and many others need for speed the RUN is fairly new so wait a bit and there will be gfx patches made by fans like there where for MW3 BF2 etc.
