Review: Dead Island

Title: Dead Island

Genre: Horror, Co-op FPS/RPG

Release Date: 9/6/2011

Systems: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

Format: DVD, Blu-ray, Digital Distro

Looking at Dead Island, it’s hard not to recall Valve’s own 4 player co-op zombie slaughter Left 4 Dead. Both feature hordes of zombies, special infected, and four immune survivors who also happen to be quite adept at combating the walking dead. At that though, the similarities end. Developer Techland manages a clean separation from L4D once players get into it, and the distinctions only become more clear as the game progresses.

Title: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Genre: Transhumanist Cyberpunk Science Fiction, First-Person Shooter

Release Date: 8/23/2011

Systems: PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray, Steam Digital Dist.

A cyberpunk thriller of incredible depth and smoother execution, Human Revolution is the saving grace of the Deus Ex brand.

Review: Hydrophobia: Prophecy

Title: Hydrophobia: Prophecy

Genre: Third-Person Action Adventure

Release Date: Out Now! (PS Network release TBA)

System: PS3/Xbox 360/PC

Format: Digital Distro (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, Steam)

Hydrophobia: Prophecy is really an experimental title more than anything else. Buyer beware: the techniques used in the game aren’t nearly ready for primetime, but it’s an interesting look at what might be possible in the future with more thorough experimentation and some good ironing out the kinks.

Review: Magicka

Title: Magicka

Genre: Action/Adventure, Fantasy, Parody

Release Date: January 25, 2011 (Worldwide)

System: PC

Format: DVD, Steam Digital Distro.

Magicka is one of those games that just comes out of nowhere and swiftly kicks you in the balls for being a tool in believing the standards of AAA games. It is a fantasy game, but a fantasy game in as much as Monty Python and the Holy Grail was a period piece about religion and chivalry. It is equal parts nostalgia and irreverence with a surprising amount of innovation thrown in for such a simplistic-seeming game. The guys over at indie group Arrowhead Studios hit an itch, an itch that has not been scratched for gamers for some time, and though it admittedly took three months of patches to get the damn thing playing decently, people who are blessed enough to be discovering it just now will be experiencing the game as it was always meant to be.

And they will love it.
