Sony: PS3 Supply “Tight”

Things don’t looks so mighty for the PlayStation 3.

After reports of a disappointing January in sales, Sony announced that the PS3 will be in limited supply in the coming months.

Sony’s Senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, stated:

“We’re working very hard with our retail partners to meet consumer interest, but the demand is tremendously high for the PS3 and we expect tight inventory in the coming months,” Seybold said.

“The strong demand carrying through the holidays was evident and early in the month we [knew] there was going to be limited supply of the PS3 at retail in January. We’re working closely with the retail channel to meet this demand, but expect tight supply for the coming months.”

In January, Wii and DS hardware were the best selling, followed by the Xbox 360 and PS3 being last.

Editor’s Comments: It isn’t a surprise to see that the PS3 is trailing in the charts, after the great Surge they had since September of 2009. The bigger problem I see, is the software that complements it. Mass Effect 2 has an impact for Microsoft; New Super Mario Bros. was January’s No. #1 game. PS3’s release of MAG didn’t really leave much of a dent, and White Knight Chronicles was given a lukewarm reception. This month’s release of Heavy Rain, while already being lauded, will probably not get a huge draw. March seems to be the make-or-break month for Sony, as the release of Final Fantasy XIII is going to be heavily anticipated; especially for the fact that it will solve the question on which version of FFXIII will sell the most: the PS3 or 360 version.
