What are Storage Devices?
Also known as “flash cards,” these little cartridges go in your Nintendo DS game port (also called slot1). Most cartridges now adays have expandable memory–supporting a MicroSD card (with the even newer ones supporting SDHC), but some come with built in memory only. These cards contain firmware that allows you to many things, play videos, homebrew applications/games, etc. However, they’re primarily used to play Nintendo DS Roms. In fact, most of the storage devices even contain cheat databases for cheating on the fly, as well as the ability to ‘slow down’ the game and use save states.
These Storage Devices are available for the Gameboy Advanced game port as well (called slot-2). Often, you are able to order a slot-1 storage device that is bundled with a GBA-Expansion pack. Some popular storage cards–

Some versions of the M3 have optional GBA-Expansion packs (i.e. the M3 DS Real). However, since new cards are always being made and some people may be interested in reading up on other cards, I recommend taking a look at this site for reviews–
So…what are some homebrew software and games that a storage device will allow you to play?
Software
Protein – An audio mixer for the DS. See video Here.

Nitrotracker – A music creator.
Win2DS – A remote control for your PC. Monkeynz is now the unofficial dev. Below is a thread in the forum he posts on. As he makes newer versions, this thread will no longer be used. Currently, it contains the most up2date version–build 0.80.

DS Linux – A Linux port for the DS.
Games
Lemmings – A port of the beloved strategy game for the DS.

Doom DS – Ever wanna play Doom on your DS? Now you can. Supports multiplayer.
Quake DS – Quake can now be played on the DS. In fact, even Quake 2 can be (though Quake 2 runs slow; Here’s a link to the Quake 2 DS video that can be found on DrunkenCoders). Here are two seperate projects dealing with the porting of Quake–

I love my M3i Zero flash cartridge for my DSi. It’s compatible with DSi and DS, and I have two 8gb Micro-SDHC cards. Oh, and the firmware for it can be upgraded, so even when Nintendo makes stupid updates to block it, I just have to wait for someone to make a new firmware and I’m back in business.
Yeah they’re pretty cool cards and keep evolving as the DS does
