The Surge: PS3 Sales' Huge Increase in Japan
Last Updated on Monday, 7 September 2009 08:55 Written by Wrathie Monday, 7 September 2009 08:55
After being placed last in Japan, Sony has now rebounded back from it’s embarrassing placement with a huge rise in PS3 sales, mostly due to the new PS3 Slims (called Lites in Japan). To understand how big the sales were, you’d have to times the previous week’s PS3 sales and times it by 150; that’s right 150. The previous weeks sales for the PS3 were only 1,000; which was pretty abysmal due to it’s scarcity and high price tag (pre-slim price down). After the price drop and new console, over 150,000 systems were sold which crushed it’s previous record of 88,000 PS3 sold back in 2006. Some PS3 games also benefited from the surge, as Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Final Fantasy demos sold about 70,000 copies.
Sony is really trying to get back on track in Japan, and with it’s lower price and heavy advertising campaign, it can surely see its’ way back up. The only real questions are: how long can they keep this going and is it too late for Sony to counteract what it’s competitors have done? We shall soon see, but as of now it may look like it will go Sony’s way for one major reason: Final Fantasy XIII.
Square-Enix is supposed announce information regarding the release of the game tomorrow, which is currently slated to be released Q4 2009 in Japan (2010 in North America). The biggest thing to note about FFXIII is that the game is a PS3-exclusive, unlike the NA versions. The game is already expected to generate a lot of sales, and could be just what the PS3 needs to continue this momentum to get the upper hand in the console wars. Again, we will have to wait and see for the results.

Found this out on Wikipedia, and it turns out that Google was founded on this day, 11 years ago (September 4, 1998). Google has basically made itself essential to the Internet in terms of searching and locating. Without it, I believe the web would be a lot different than what it is today. So here’s to Google, the multi-billion dollar corporation that stole our hears away.

Disney Buys Marvel
Last Updated on Monday, 31 August 2009 01:08 Written by Wrathie Monday, 31 August 2009 01:08
The Walt Disney Co. is going to by Marvel Entertainment Inc. for about $4 Billion in cash and stock, according to Yahoo.com. Most of the character, approximately 5000 of them, will transfer over. This includes many of Stan Lee’s creations such as Spiderman and X-men.
Disney has said that this merger will benefit Marvel, as it will help them in the global distribution process as well as friendly relationships with distributors in selling Marvel based products. Disney also hopes to benefit in improving its allure to young males, as it usual market appeals more towards girls (Hannah Montana, The Jonas Bros.). Another possibly team up is the production of Marvel based Pixar films, as Pixar films in general turn out to have a big draw in movie revenue.
Marvel currently has deals with other movie studios, that Disney will honor if the transaction goes through. (For example, Iron Man 2 will be released by Viacom’s Paramount Pictures in 2010; Spiderman 4 will be released by Sony’s Columbia Pictures in 2011).
The board of directors of both companies have agreed to the transaction. It still needs approval from the majority of Marvel’s stockholders, as well clear an antitrust review before it can be officially settled. The deal should be closed by the end of the year.

Editor’s Note: Personally, I think this deal can go either way. It might piss off many people, but there could be potential in this deal that would make Disney even more lucrative. Nevertheless, we can all agree that the mighty Disney Corporation has gotten all the more powerful. Voice your opinions in the comments below.

Video Game Villain of the Month: August 2009 – Bowser
Last Updated on Monday, 31 August 2009 12:00 Written by Wrathie Monday, 31 August 2009 12:00
One of the legendary video game villains out there, Bowser is perhaps one of the more “infamous”. Also know as King Koopa, Bowser is the main villian in the Mario franchise. Although he is a rotund and menacing figure, he also has a comical side associated with him (an oafish, muscle head) that has made him a lovable villain we could not do without. He has also played the role of hero along with Mario in critically acclaimed Super Mario RPG, making him one of the few characters to ever switch sides (although briefly).
With his “sharp” look and “fiery” ways, this king will always have his place (albeit forcibly) in the Mushroom Kingdom lore. The Spiky, Hard-Shelled King of the Koopas, Bowser.
