Foose’s new phone: AT&T ‘s Huawei Impulse 4G

UPDATE:  I am sorry everyone, but I jumped on the Apple bandwagon and I am now the semi-proud/confused owner of an iPhone 5

Good morning.  I spent almost all yesterday figuring out how to work my new phone, the Impulse.  Its been a while since I’ve had a touch screen and a smart phone.  But after much time spent with it, I can finally write a review:

Predictive entry swype, Ringer ID, Streaming Video, Speaker phone, USB mode/storage,
Vibrate modes, and Wi-Fi

SUMMARY: By far one of the most interesting phones, and I’m in some position to make this call, since I went through about 11 phones while with Sprint (Only 1 survived intact)  The Android OS is definitely a new experience for me, a good one too.  The battery life is questionable, the background stuff uses a lot of juice, like the location services for example.  On that note, there is an app that displays each service that is consuming the most amount of battery, so you’ll know which ones to stop to save your battery.  Another cool feature is the Swype input feature, basically you “swipe” over the keys you want to enter, so if I wanted to type in “Skyline” I’d start at “S” and swipe my finger to “k” then to “y” then to “l”, etc etc and it’d come out as “skyline”

RECOMMENDED APPS:
What’s a phone without apps?  Well, after testing a good bunch of them, I personally recommend:
Flashlight by Nikolay Ananiev – A great app to turn your LED flash into a flashlight!  Or a strobe light, or whatever you feel!
Vlingo by Vlingo Corp. – Pretty much the Siri of the Andriod world.  Has an in-car mode, customizable spoken greeting, and is amazingly accurate voice detection!

did you ever figure out how to put vibration on the impulse for text messages? I just got this phone and I cant figure it out…

  2. Comments  Foose   |  Saturday, 22 October 2011 at 12:36 PM

Best thing I could come up with, since the phone doesn’t have a “Vibration Only” feature for the text messages is put the ring tone for “Notifications” to “Silent” then set the “Vibrate” mode to “Always” so you won’t hear anything when a text (or any other notification like email) arrives, but it’ll just vibrate.

    Hope that helps!

I just got my phone and I can’t figure out how to put personal ringtones to my contacts, if you could help me I sure would appricate it. Thank You in advance 🙂

  4. Comments  Foose   |  Monday, 24 October 2011 at 12:16 AM

Ok, Vickie! go to your “Contacts” and lets say you have a person named “Larry”, press his tab, and you should be on the screen with two categories “Details” and “Call Log.” Press the “Settings” button (2nd button from the left on the bottom of the phone, has 4 horizontal lines, the top being longer) and press “Options.” From there, go to “Ringtone”, press it and you can select from music or ringtones. Hope that helps!

Foose Thanks a lot for the tip about the music ringtones. I just got the Impulse 4g and couldn’t figure out how to do it until I came here! Very much appreciated!

wait i dont get how to make it vibrate for text messages.. i tried what you wrote but its still not working for me =/

  9. Comments  Foose   |  Monday, 31 October 2011 at 3:28 AM

Tiffany: You mean you set the ring tone of the notifications to “Silent” and the vibrate setting to “Always”?

  10. Comments  Michael   |  Monday, 31 October 2011 at 11:29 AM

Is there anyway to set a different tone for the text message beside the given set list they give you? I want to set this text tone for my phone but I can’t set it as a text tone. Only as a ringtone.

  11. Comments  Foose   |  Monday, 31 October 2011 at 5:19 PM

Michael – I’ve been fiddling around, and so far I havent found a way to get text tones onto this phone. Ill get back to you once I find a way

  12. Comments  Angie   |  Monday, 31 October 2011 at 9:33 PM

Can you change the messaging format to look like a conversation rather than all my sent messages together and all the received messages together? Makes it hard to read a conversation. Thanks!

  13. Comments  Foose   |  Tuesday, 01 November 2011 at 1:23 AM

Tiffany: After going to your text messages, press the settings button, go to “settings” scroll down to “Vibrate” and select “Always vibrate” then for the ringtone, select your default or a separate tone for the notifications. Does that help at all?

  14. Comments  Foose   |  Tuesday, 01 November 2011 at 1:25 AM

Angie: So far, I can’t find a way to alter the conversation format. What kind of layout did you have in mind? The format its in seems pretty easy for me

  15. Comments  Foose   |  Tuesday, 01 November 2011 at 1:36 AM

Michael – To use custom ringtones for your phone ringtone, your alarm or your text message notification, simply copy an mp3 file to one of the following folders:

    /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
    /sdcard/media/audio/alarms
    /sdcard/media/audio/notifications

Then when you go into the “Notification” settings, the ringtone you want should appear on the list. Hope that helps!

Hey it’s me again a friend of mine has a cd collection outta this world, I was wondering if I could put them on my phone and if I can do I have to convert them to mp3’s, if so could you explain how to do this Thanks again I told you, you were go to person and I sure appricate you Thanks in advance again 🙂

  17. Comments  Foose   |  Tuesday, 01 November 2011 at 1:30 PM

Im not 100% sure of the formats, but mp3’s are advisable because of their high quality to file size ratio, however i have heard the phone reads .wav files too…. (wav format = average quality, and huge file size)

Did you have any luck saving pictures from received text messages to the gallery on your phone?

  19. Comments  Foose   |  Tuesday, 01 November 2011 at 6:17 PM

Tried it out myself, best I can do for now is:

-When you get the text with the picture, press and hold the picture until a menu appears
-Select the “Copy attached to SD” card (should have come with a 2gb)
-Go to “Gallery” and the picture you got in your text should be in “Downloads”

  20. Comments  EmyleeNicole   |  Wednesday, 02 November 2011 at 5:26 PM

How do you get to your ringtones on this phone!? It’s so confusing ):

  21. Comments  Foose   |  Wednesday, 02 November 2011 at 11:22 PM

    EmyleeNicole: try this–
From the Android Markey, install Astro File Manager

Open Astro (I think it will default to your SD Card, if not, scroll up or down and find your SD Card)

    Tap on SD Card

Press the Menu button, then select New, then select Directory.

Here you can enter the name of the folder. Type in Media and click Create.

Tap on Media so it opens the folder

Create another folder and name it Audio

Tap on Audio so it opens the folder

Create two folders here named Notifications and Ringtones

Save your music or sounds in the appropriate folders and they will then be available in Settings where you can select them for ringtones or notification sounds.

    Hope this information helps.

  33. Comments  Foose   |  Wednesday, 30 November 2011 at 3:42 PM

Hmmm, I’m not sure if there is an app for those issues. Could be either a hardware or firmware defect. Did you try a cold or a complete reset or updating the phone? If that doesnt help, try switching the phone out with at&t

  34. Comments  dylan   |  Wednesday, 30 November 2011 at 11:31 PM

Ive tried switching it out an i cant without paying. I havent tried reseting it because wont that erace my stuff? An what would reseting it do any way like what might make it stop if i did
    ?

  35. Comments  Foose   |  Thursday, 01 December 2011 at 7:53 AM

Sorry I mis-spoke, I meant a factory reset. Basically it involves deleting all information stored in the device. This is essentially the same as reformatting a hard drive. A factory reset may become necessary from time to time on a device which is no longer working. It should be used with caution, as it destroys all data stored in the unit. Many problems with a hand held electronic device such as freezing can be resolved by performing a factory reset or hard reset.
To do this: Menu -> Settings -> Privacy -> Factory data reset (I recommend backing up all data before attempting this)

  38. Comments  Foose   |  Monday, 12 December 2011 at 1:02 AM

When you plug in the phone to the computer, turn on the file management, and then about 4 folders should show up on your desktop. That’s your info, and you should copy and paste that somewhere, or you can wirelessly back up your data OR go to settings, go to privacy, then check the “back up data”

  39. Comments  mandi   |  Saturday, 17 December 2011 at 11:13 AM

how do you fix the messaging so the messages are in order and not organized by who sent them? Right now it has all of the person I am texting messages grouped at the top and mine at the bottom, so in order for me to read their message I have to scroll up and find it.

  40. Comments  Foose   |  Sunday, 18 December 2011 at 12:54 AM

I dunno how you ran into that one! I’m using “Messenger” and it has them organized by who sent what most recently. Are you using the same one?

I want oovoo on my Impulse but it says that it is not compatible. Is there a way that i can get around that and put it on my phone somehow? But the thing is i have skype so why can’t i download oovoo?

  42. Comments  Cary   |  Sunday, 25 December 2011 at 3:12 PM

Thanks for the info! Any idea how to perform a reset when you are locked out! My daughter enabled the pattern lock and forgot the pattern, so I can’t go about it the usual way!!

  43. Comments  Foose   |  Monday, 26 December 2011 at 11:11 AM

To SCw: I actually haven’t heard of oovoo until now, but I reckon it’s very similar to Skype from what I read online. Unfortunately I only found that oovoo is compatible with the Evo, iphone, ipads, and galaxy, just to name a few. I hate to say it, but the Impulse is in a lower class compared to those phone, and I didn’t find it on the android market either =\

To Cary: There is a rumor of a few loop holes, especially if you call the handset, which shouldn’t require you to unlock your phone,a and during the call, you can hit the “home” or “back” button to enter the main menu, then proceed to the settings to change the security lock codes/methods…. scratch that, I just tried that and it didnt work. You might have to go into the coding and add in KeyguardLock.disableKeyguard() so when you turn on the phone, it SHOULD bypass the lock screen. You’ll have to look for something liek “com.android.internal.widget.LockPatternUtils”
Just be warned I havent tried this yet since I’m at work without a cable.

If not, is there some way I could back up my data onto a computer?

  64. Comments  Albert Ashford   |  Tuesday, 31 July 2012 at 10:00 AM

To back up: Connect your phone to a computer, enable the storage, go into the DCIM folder, move all the pictures to your pc

As for the gallery, make sure the pics are in the DCIM folder?

  70. Comments  Foose   |  Monday, 27 August 2012 at 7:35 PM

First, turn off your phone. Then remove the back cover. The SD card slot is near the bottom of the phone next to the SIM card. Press the SD card inwards (Follow the diagram on the phone) and release. Be careful, its prone to shoot out. Then simply put the new SD card in until it clicks. Done!

Hi, Recently when i take pictures I’m only able to review that last picture I took; to see the others I have to go into the camera folder and review them all individually. Is there a way to save them all to view them from the camera?

  72. Comments  Foose   |  Tuesday, 28 August 2012 at 7:08 PM

When in camera mode, theres a small picture of the last picture you took in the upper right hand corner. When you press that, it brings up the picture in full screen, and you can review the previous pictures in the camera album by swiping your finger across the screen. To review them in thumbnail mode, press the folder icon at the top of the screen, or to view the different albums, press the gallery icon at the top next to the folder icon.

Hi Ellie. This usually means dead pixels and faulty connections. You have the option to get a new screen and install it, but honestly that is more trouble than it is worth. You may need to look to ebay for the part, or a new/refurbished phone.

Have you tried re-calibrating the battery by charging it as much as it can go, then letting the battery drain completely, then charging it fully again?

I have a Impulse 4G phone and i like it and all but theres one problem with the music app. You cant see what kind of ringtones you have under: artists/albums/songs/playlists! I see them in the file manager and i can use as ringtone but i just want to know why those ringtones isnt under artists/albums/songs/playlists. Is there a way to fix it or is that music app broken? Please email me back under Kidwyn23@yahoo.com Thanx!!
