Nearly 3 weeks ago, Sony released firmware 3.0 for the PlayStation 3 (the firmware specs can be viewed here). It presented itself with a new layout, which coincided with the release of the PS3 slim.
Yet, the 3.0 firmware had some issues, with the result of certain games freezing after long durations. One of most notable games, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, froze and crashed the game for many user that it actually prompted Sony to look into the issue.
Their response? Sony announced it would release firmware 3.01 to counteract the problem 3.0 introduced. While it will correct the problem for Uncharted, it also should clear up any problems with games that had issue with the old firmware. As of Monday, the firmware was released to PS3 users.
This isn’t the first time a landmark Sony firmware upgrade had issues. In July 2008, firmware 2.4 cause critical issues to the PS3 that many systems ceased to function properly. Sony then scrambled around to fix and did with firmware 2.4.1. The firmware 2.4.0 was notable because it installed the trophy system.

Man, they really need to test these updates thoroughly. Not to say I don’t have some sympathy for them because it just gets harder and harder to program for increasingly-powerful hardware and complex software. Still, take a little more time before you release these things, Sony. You can afford the time!
Yeah I know right. Give us PS2 emulation on the ps3 slim while you are at it too….
I don’t really care for the PS2 emulation that much, even on my classic 80. But they do have a patent out for the PS2 emulation, it might come as a firmware update. Methink they might do it either in the fall or sometime in 2010, since I think the PS2 will stop selling. (Since that’s the only reason WHY they aren’t putting emulations in the newer ones).
