So, I ordered this thing from Amazon, because my Macbook runs up to 92C (Which Apple claims its “within operable temperatures” so I’m taking their word for it… with caution. However, I did run the laptop at that temperature for about 6 hours while playing Call of Duty, so I feel more assured. But to be safe, I ordered this cooler.
Here are the results of my tests:
SETTINGS:
Control group: Room temp of 23C, wooden desk
Variables: Mac’s fan speed, Cooler Pad’s fan speed, processes
TEMPERATURES:
Idle, on the desk, mac’s fan speed at 3000 RPM = 33C
Idle, on the cooling pad at 700 rpm, mac’s fan speed at 3000 rpm= 33C
Idle, on the cooling pad at 1400 rpm, mac’s fan speed at 3000 rpm = 33C
Idle, on the desk, mac’s fan speed at 6200 RPM = 32C
Idle, on the cooling pad at 700 rpm, mac’s fan speed at 6200 rpm = 35C
Idle, on the cooling pad at 1400 rpm, mac’s fan speed at 6200 rpm = 35C
Working, on the desk mac’s fan speed at 6200 RPM = 87C
Working, on the cooling pad at 700 rpm, mac’s fan speed at 6200 rpm = 87C
Working, on the cooling pad at 1400 rpm, mac’s fan speed at 6200 rpm = 87C
Working = Running adobe flash cs5, rendering in lightwave 10 full graphics, 300,000+ polygons, 5xAA, radiosity and raytracing, watching a movie on quicktime and youtube
CONCLUSION:
Well, this was anti-climatic. I guess this was because I was on a wooden desk after all, but I’m sure that if this laptop were on my lap, and in a hotter room, there would be more obvious differences. However, I do feel that it’s worth getting nevertheless because most laptops have their vents on the bottom, where as this macbook pro vents through the sides, and through the keyboard.
COOL STUFF:
Well, there are some cool features. Like the blue LED glow, and also the pad has an extra USB to make up for the one it takes. Comes with a 600mm USB cable as well to power it. Macbooks are a bit short on USBs these days. It’s extremely quiet, and also it has two height settings, as well as adjustable fan speeds, with a power button.
I ordered this product from Amazon at $25.99
