Google Pays $1337 for Chrome Vulnerabilities

google-pays-1337-for-chrome-vulnerabilities

A good tactic that some companies take to help encourage users to take the initiative of submitting security vulnerabilities is to reward their users with cash. Google is paying between $500 to $1337 — a number that they purposely chose since “1337” spells “leet” in geek-speak. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d love to get $1337 for submitting a vulnerability 🙂

3 Free Months of Avira Premium Security Suite

3-free-months-of-avira-premium-security-suite

My favorite antivirus is Avira. The interface is simple, it doesn’t use too much resources, and it has a high detection rate. The security suite not only includes the antivirus, but also their firewall, which works pretty well. Normally, you can get a free 1 month license to beta test their security suite. However, they ocassionally give out 3 month licenses (and even 6 month licenses sometimes). To get a free 3 month license go Here. To download the actual security suite trial, which is around 34MB, click Here.

Edit: Looks like the old method of getting these 3 month licenses has died. No worries though, as there is a new way! Sign up for a license from this Avira promotion page (it’s in Russian). Use Google translator to guide you if you’re having a hard time.

768-bit RSA Cracked

768-bit-rsa-cracked

Though it was inevitable, the 728-bit RSA encryption has been cracked! This means to be truly secure people must use 1024-bit RSA encryption. To crack this encryption, a cluster of computers were used. It took a bit less than half a day and the result was 5 terabytes of data. 1024-bit RSA encryption will be compromised next.

GSM Call Intercepting/Hacking Software Released

I’ve been meaning to post about this since the 28th, but GSM encryption has been cracked. A short excerpt from This Article mentions the possible implications of this and also mentions that an open source software for exercising this has been released.

On Sunday 27th of December at the 26th Chaos Communication Congress (26C3) in Berlin, security researchers published open source instructions for cracking the A5/1 mobile telephony encryption algorithm and for building an IMSI catcher that intercepts mobile phone communication. The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard for digital mobile phone networks, which is used by around four billion people in 200 countries, is quite insecure, explained cryptography expert Karsten Nohl in front of a large audience of hackers. While this has been known in academic circles since 1994, the evidence now produced leaves “no more room for playing hide and seek” said Nohl.

Anti-Virus Effect on Computer’s Performance Comparison

Having anti-malware scanners is very important. However, it may not be worth it if the scanner itself make your computer ridiculously slow…The following virus scanners were tested to see which gave the lowest impact on system performance:

Avast! Free 5.0, AVG Anti-Virus 9.0, AVIRA AntiVir Premium 9.0, BitDefender Antivirus 2010, eScan Antivirus 10, ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.0, F-Secure Anti-Virus 2010, G Data Antivirus 2010, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010, Kingsoft Antivirus 9 Plus, McAfee VirusScan Plus 2010, Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0, Normal Antivirus & Anti-Spyware 7.30, Sophos Anti-Virus 9.0.1, Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2010, and TrustPort Antivirus 2010.

The top five virus scanners that least impacted systems were: AVIRA, Kingsoft, F-Secure, Sophos, and Kaspersky. For a list of all the results, as well as a bunch of information on the testing, check out this PDF.
