OpEd: Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut- I Consider the Matter Closed.

oped-mass-effect-3-extended-cut-i-consider-the-matter-closed

I think we all were not expecting much from the Extended Cut given the lackluster promises given to us by BioWare beforehand and the free multiplayer DLCs in the intervening time period that might have smacked of desperation. That’s why when the EC finally rolled around, it, for most of us, if the forums are to be believed, fixed some of the most grievous problems regarding the ending. Believe it or not, those promises regarding closure and insight were really all that was needed to fix the bewilderment and anger.

That said though, was it that hard, BioWare, to put this content in? What I saw were elements that really should have been part of the ending narrative in the first place– a very targeted package designed to address the complaints that popped up most frequently and also fit into a specific budget and timeframe, not a package that really reflected a love or appreciation of the series from either the creators or the fans. A small text message at the end does not a heartfelt message necessarily make, however better it is than the insulting “Buy More DLC” blurb that was previously there.

Review: Mass Effect 3

Title: Mass Effect 3

Genre: Third-Person Shooter RPG, Science Fiction

Release Date: March 6th, 2012 (US), March 9th, 2012 (EU), March 15th, 2012 (JP)

System: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

Format: DVD, Blu-ray, Digital (EA Origin)

Lacking no amount of graphical and combat polish that belies their other titles, Mass Effect 3 is a surprisingly wanting exercise for BioWare in terms of the deeper narrative substance of it.

Bugs: Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer

So there are the bugs that can be fixed client-side. What about the ones that happen server-side and you have no idea what the shit just happened? As far as I know, no one on the team named their characters Ichabod, Crane, or any combination/variant of the above.

So I was going to write a Mass Effect 3 Review…

Picard: WTF is this shit?
And then I finished the game. It ends with the Internet exploding.

In all seriousness, the past week has been filled with messages of abject disappointment and naked rage (sometimes by actual naked people) over on every forum dedicated to Mass Effect 3 discussions, but none has been buzzing more than the BioWare Social Network Forums over the ending to Mass Effect 3, where a not insignificant fraction of the player population has been posting almost every second of the day to the point that a full campaign has emerged to protest the ending. Child’s Play, a notable charity for children involving video gaming, has been the recipient of over $45,000 in donations from people who are angry for the children (I’m not kidding).

And naturally, I do not want to touch this with a six-foot pole. I’m still trying to figure out what in the hell happened in the ending.
